Beck Members to Vote on Governance Change

Voting members of the Beck Center (donors who have contributed at least $100 to the Beck Center during the past year) are invited to attend a special meeting on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. in the Mackey Main Stage Theater. At that time a vote will be called to adopt a new governance document.

For the past several months, the Board of Directors has been reviewing the current corporate governance documents (consisting of a Code of Regulations and By-Laws) and considering revisions in order to ensure that it reflects the way the institution is currently operating.

Specifically, the voting membership structure, which was adopted in 1948, is being considered for change to a non-voting membership structure. This action requires the creation of a new governance document to reflect the current practical role of the membership i.e., an organization operating with member benefits rather than member responsibilities. Currently, the members vote on the class of directors for the institution. The proposed new governance document gives that responsibility to the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors and the Women’s Board of the Beck Center have voiced their support of the proposed new governance document, which also includes updated language to reflect current nonprofit best practices. At the annual meeting of the voting membership on December 7, 2010, the subject of the proposed changes in governance was raised for discussion. Members who attended the meeting raised no questions or concerns. Therefore it was decided to bring the matter to a vote.

Please review the following documents prior to the March 24 meeting:
Current Beck Center Code of Regulations
Current Beck Center By-laws
New proposed Code of Regulations
Minutes from the December 7, 2010 Annual Meeting
Memo to Membership - Full Text

Printed copies are also available at the Customer Service Center.

Dependable Painting Spruces Up Galleries

Dependable Painting, the company that refurbished the dance studio in the main building in late 2009, has generously donated its services once again.

The Cleveland Artists Foundation (CAF) gallery, located at the east end of the main building, was showing wear. The walls were dirty and pock-marked and in dire need of attention. Dependable Painting stepped in to repair and paint the walls, providing a beautiful canvas to showcase some of Cleveland's greatest artists.

“As a small non-profit organization with minimal staff, I’m overwhelmed with the improvements Dependable Painting made in our space!  This is a project we could never have taken on ourselves or even budgeted for," says Lauren Hansgen, CAF's executive director. "The painters were pleasant and professional and worked very efficiently.  They paid extra attention to clean-up at the end of the project and were always amenable to any special requests I had.  We’re extremely grateful for their services and the outstanding job they did!”

Stop by the CAF gallery and see for yourself the amazing job Dependable Painting did!

Honor Your Dream Maker

Looking for an especially unique gift to honor a loved one or celebrate a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary? Want to capture the special moments created every day at the Beck Center for your event? Become a Beck Center Dream Maker.

The Beck Center Dream Makers program gives individuals the opportunity to sponsor a Beck Center professional or youth theater production or program. In acknowledgement of your generous gift, Dream Makers will be recognized in the production’s playbill and with a framed photo in the lobby, which is presented to them after the run of the show.  The Dream Makers also receive 12 tickets to bring their family and friends to the show.  If you are planning a celebratory event for the Dream Makers, we will work with you to create recognition pieces to help make your event even more memorable!

Our first Dream Makers are Emily and Damien Armella. In honor of their marriage, mother-of-the-bride, Kathy Baskoff, made a generous gift to the Beck Center for the Arts.  In recognition of their love of children, the Beck Center Youth Theater production of Cats, May 13-21, 2011, is dedicated to Emily and Damien.

With a gift to the Beck Center Dream Makers program, you’re not only honoring a loved one…you’re also helping others by supporting the Beck Center for the Arts!  To find out more about this program, contact Sally Weakley at 216.521.2540 x18 or sweakley@beckcenter.org.
