Major Gift for Beck Center

Dworken & Bernstein Gifts Beck Center $50,000

Beck Center for the Arts is pleased to announce that it received a major gift of $50,000 from a Dworken & Bernstein Co., L.P.A. Cy Pres Award. A group of nearly 50 Beck Center staff, faculty, supporters, and students attended the gift announcement on Monday, June 4 at Beck Center.

Dworken & Bernstein founded “Ohio Lawyers Give Back,” a website dedicated to promoting the use of “cy pres” (pronounced "sigh-pray") in class action settlements. “My Irish Catholic mother always said ‘Patrick! Do the right thing!’ I believe this is the right thing,” said Patrick Perotti, a partner with Dworken & Bernstein. Perotti's class action practice has focused on providing justice not only for class members, but also for the broader community. Cy pres is an ancient legal doctrine which allows law firms to distribute the unclaimed money from class action legal settlements to charities or nonprofit organizations. "You can't find anything like the Beck Center virtually anywhere else in Cleveland or in Northeast Ohio," Perotti said.

The $50,000 award is from a class action settlement with AT&T. "It makes such a difference to an organization like us," said Beck Center President & CEO Lucinda Einhouse.

Through the innovative use of cy pres, Mr. Perotti has directed over $25 million in unclaimed class settlement monies to charities and nonprofits.
