Mary Deutschman Exhibit
Beck Center is pleased to present Mary Deutschman: Color Lessons
January 10 - February 10 in the Jean Bulicek Galleria
In addition to Mary’s colorful oil paintings, her lively sketches and color experiments make the show meaningful for both students and those who are curious about how it all happened.
I didn’t always paint but drawing for me was magic. As a young girl, I spent summer afternoons in my parents’ attic surrounded by trunks full of glamorous high heels, beaded handbags and stunning, lace dresses from the 30’s. I tried them on, sketched them and dreamed of designing fabulous clothes. This lead to my studying commercial art and choosing a career that I loved. I was a fashion illustrator, designer then an art director.
I was busy flying off to New York or Chicago to direct photo shoots when a handsome prince swept me off my feet. We were married and moved to Boston. Rather than continuing to fly off, I chose another career. Painting became my obsession. Not just painting but using color, lots of it.
Each painting became an experience that allowed me to put color on canvas in a way that suited my fancy. Even when I thought the painting might be finished I added more. I had to go there. Painting allowed me to teach workshops, write three books, learn computer programs, give demos to groups and classes, and meet lots of wonderful people.
Now I live and paint and show my paintings in both Bay Village, OH and Naples, Florida. Each provides a unique inspiration.
